What Is Downtime? How Does It Work?

“Downtime” is what we call scenes that happen around or outside the current in-game time or any scene taking place before or after the current in-game time.

It is a place for your character to do what they want with whom they want (within reason). It’s the perfect place for when you want to write just for the pleasure of it. Indulge yourself, and in doing so, give us a deeper glimpse of your character.

Downtime threads can involve an ST, other player characters, or an individual character alone. Please note, however, that any player or ST can join downtime threads at any time.

Downtime is both completely unrelated and intrinsically tied to main events. Your character obviously cannot be in two places at once. But they can be in four places at different times.

This is where the notion of multi-level chess comes to mind. There are a few tricks to accomplish posting in multiple timelines successfully, and here are a few:

If you begin a downtime thread and are unsure of what time or day would be the best to choose for your scene setup, leave it open-ended. Figure out when it happens later. You’ll usually see an opportunity or a block of time open up in the main game where the situation or scene would fit and can make mention of it in one of your posts.
