Character Concept Submission Form

Hi there! We’re pleased that you want to apply for player status at the Escaping Reality game boards.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE CURRENTLY *NOT* ACCEPTING NEW SUBMISSIONS FOR THE MYSTERIA OR ER GAME SITE.

The first step is to create a character concept that fits within our current game and submit it to the ER Storyteller Team for their review and approval. Fill in the form below, and when it’s complete, hit the ‘Submit’ button. We’ll receive your concept, have a read and get back to you within 48 hours.

Now for some details and tips:

Our current active game has a medieval/fantasy setting, but at a very low-tech level. Think gritty impoverishment. Magic exists, but it’s extremely rare.

Your journey begins as a city citizen who has two options:

Through bad luck or chance, your character is arrested and tossed onto a boat – destination unknown.
Out of dire necessity or an adventurous nature, your character seeks passage out of the mainland city. The only way out? You got it – a boat.

You don’t need previous role-playing experience. You do need to be able to write well and have a firm grasp on English grammar, spelling and punctuation. You also need common sense, the ability to interact and play well with others and a sharp imagination.

To increase your chances of having your character concept accepted, follow these tips:

Your concept doesn’t have to be long or detailed, but it should be realistic and logical.
Avoid one-word answers, as we need to see that you can write well.
Your character must be over 18 years old.
Avoid violet-sparkle eyes, knee-length red hair, bursting muscles or other such silliness.
Avoid horribly scarred bodies or missing limbs. That may have been fairly common in the medieval era, but in our experience it just hinders game play.
Avoid a character history that includes family death, a mental disorder, violent trauma, assault, rape or murder witnessing, in the hopes of creating an “interesting” character. It doesn’t work.
Avoid giving your character magical talents, special abilities or keen senses, such as “can tell when someone’s lying” or “makes people feel compelled to tell her things”.

We prefer nice, normal, ordinary characters. Work to make your character as believable as possible, and write a good description with realistic history, some personal skills and character traits.

When we receive your character concept, we’ll review it and reply within 48 hours. If approved, you’ll receive an invitation to an audition with the Storytellers so that you can show off your talents, become familiar with our game and learn how it works. If you successfully pass the audition phase, you’ll receive full player status and be able to join the game.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE CURRENTLY ACCEPTING CHARACTERS INDICATED ON THE ‘OCCUPATION’ DROPDOWN LIST.

Feel free to submit characters having other occupations, but we cannot guarantee acceptance.
